Frequently used terms in TV/Media industry

ATL : Above the Line - Refers to Traditional Media Definition. I.e. TV / Radio and Print

BTL : Below the Line - this refers to all other media used which does NOT fall into the category of ATL. Mainly OOH, Events and Interactive

Burst : A concentrated weight of activity which is limited to a specific time frame. Usually the weight index is higher than at other periods of activity. I.e. 2000 GRP's in launch month - 4 weeks and then 1000 GRP's for post launch and then maintenance. The First 4 weeks can be termed Burst Activity.

CERP : Cost per effective reach point. A newer measure used, where in a reach based plan, how much it costs to reach your consumers ONCE.. Calculated as - Total TV cost in plan divided by the 1+ Reach (audience reached at least once)

Circulation : The total number of copies sold in the market of a specific publication. (This is total print run minus the return copies)

CPM : The cost to reach a 1000 in the defined target population. Used as an efficiency tool to measure media options and select the most viable. I.e. in reaching the most consumers with the lowest cost

CPRP : Cost to "buy" one rating point. I.e. If a particular programme has 10 TRP's and costs Rs. 10,000/= the CPRP is Rs. Rs. 1,000/=. Is a tool to measure buying efficiency of a plan or a programme. Usually, the total TV cost is divided by the total GRP's in a plan to arrive at this figure

Duplication (Print) : The proportion of Average Issue Readers of one publication who are also Average Issue Readers of the other publication. (the base for duplication is average issue readership)

Effective Frequency : A Theory which combines the reach and frequency goals needed.

Flighting : A practice used for scheduling media. This is where equal spends are used in equal intervals for a period of time. E.g. 1000 GRP's in the First and Last week of every month. Graphically Depicted

Frequency : NUMBER OF TIMES the Target audience is exposed to the advertising message during a specific period of time

GRP : Gross Rating Points. GRP is a sum of the reach and frequency weights in a given plan. GRP = Avg. Frequency x Reach. Used to gauge the effectiveness and to compare plans and deliveries of media

HUT Rating : Homes Using Television at a particular time. This is expressed as a percentage of all TV homes

Media Mix : A combination of mediums used to achieve a desired objective. Usually, Print+Tv+Radio depending on the target audience and the objective

OOH : Out of Home - usually refers to Billboards and hoarding, but by definition its meaning is quite literal

Pulsing : A practice used for scheduling media. This is where a minimum level is maintained and then peaks introduced at various intervals. Usually used when there is an initiative in the period of activity. Graphically Depicted

When watching images or video, we focus on particular areas of the scene. We do not scan a scene in raster fashion; instead, our visual attention tends to jump from one point to another. These so-called saccades are driven by a fixation mechanism, which directs our eyes towards objects of interest
Studies have shown that the direction of gaze is not completely idiosyncratic to individual viewers. Instead, a significant number of viewers will focus on the same regions of a scene
“we do not see, we look” .. We focus our visual attention according to task at hand and the scene content. The reason why this behavior should be taken into account in video encoding and quality assessment is that our visual acuity is not uniform across the entire visual field.
People and especially faces are among the objects attracting the most attention.. If there are faces of people in a scene, we will look at them immediately. Furthermore, because of our familiarity with people’s faces, we are very sensitive to distortions or artifacts occurring in them. People in the picture and their facial expressions are among the most important criteria for image selection.
Research in the field of olfaction is limited, as there is no consistent method of testing user capability of smell. Modeling the Lantern

I personally enjoyed modeling this Lantern, and it took me about 1 hour including to light and render,

As you can see I have used “Lathe” modifier to get the Glass bit and same for the bottom gold color part of it,

The glass is a gray color Bilnn shader. With a falloff map on the diffuse slot, flass off color light gray and white (which will give a transparent glass effect) with opacity set to 40. Glossiness 50.

Made with 3dsd max as usual, here are few settings that I have used for the “Orange” material.

Orange material

Diffuse Color = R:231, G:156, B 25
Diffuse Map = Noise map, Regular, size 150
Noise colors = Color -1 = R: 237 G: 95 B: 0
Color-2 = R: 255 G: 174 b 0
Glossiness = Clone the noise map from the diffuse color and set the noise amount to 85
Bump= amount 20
Bump map = add a mix map and add two different noise values to each of the mix maps
Reflection = amount 5
Reflection map = add a smoke map, size 100, iterations 5, colors black and white.

Used Vary with GI 3 bounces, three vray area lights.

Aluminium material : Vray

well its fairly simple to set up...
get the aluminium colour from an image.......

so make the vray mat the same colour as the image .. you can do this by going to File, then View image file... then you can right click on the image and you are able to get the correct colour of the image.

Then you can drag and drop that colour to your materail difusse slot..
Then go to your glossy set that to around 0.7 .. and subdivs to around 10.
if you have the latest version of vray you can use Highlights also.
Not forgetting to set your reflection to around 30 = grey...
you could also use Frensel aswell .... play with it and see what you get..

Vray Opacity map

Leaves, feathers, and many other things like those would be a pain to model. So the use of opacity masks have been used on grids to give a quick version of these things.

Its the same principle in VRay material but it would be setup slightly different seeing as how there is no opacity slot. For this we use the refract slot and set the IOR to 1. That takes care of your opacity.

A common mistake in the standard material with this method is people forget that if they want to have specular highlights they will need to use a mask in the specular slot to kill the highlight on the supposedly empty transparent areas. With VRay material reflections are used for specular highlights so we will need to add the mask to the reflection slot instead.

As you can see in the image it is very simple. It is just a matter of planning your texture accordingly.
I have UVW mapped the image which was done in Photoshop to a sphere, and created bump maps separately to give the bumpy look.
Used area lights to give soft shadows.

Creating a Ice Material

Here is How I Created my Ice material, hope you guys like it.
I have used a software called Final Renderer to render this image, but even from the defoult 3ds max renderer you can achive similar results using the "Skylight + Light Tracer".

there are several ways to make Ice materials, this is one of them

Falloff maps are very Important to give natural Luminosity as well as Transparency details. I have the same Falloff values to every Falloff map.

72 DPI or 300 DPI - 3DS Max

Have you ever asked to your client "What resolution do you want it?" he responds, "Make it 300 DPI"(dots per inch). Video and 3D Animation work in Pixels. Many times, animators render out a 3000 by 2000 pixel image, bring it into their imaging program, and it reads 72 dpi. This is inaccurate because the resolution is created for pixels, not dpi. Photoshop simply assigns a default dpi to the image because there is no associated per-inch resolution embedded in the rendered image file.

Next time ask the client that you need to know both the DPI and the final print size. For instance, if that person is running an image that's going to be 8 inches × 9 inches, at 300 DPI, then Multiply 300 DPI by this final print size, and you'll get a rendered image that's 2400 × 2700 pixels. That's what you should render and deliver to the client.

However, that's not true of .TIF (Tagged Image File) Format files you can embed the actual DPI information inthem. In 3ds max , when you're rendering images for print, make sure a.) You render them as .TIF files, and b.) When you set the .TIF preferences, set the dots per inch to whatever the print clients want. Doing so embeds the correct DPI information in the rendering.

Okay, here's one final thought about outputting your 3D renders to print. 3ds max 6 comes with a dynamite new feature: the Print Size Wizard. Go to Rendering > Print Size Wizard, and a cute little dialog appears. Here, you can dial just about any render-to-print settings you want. Set your output to portrait or landscape, choose the unit measurements (millimeters or inches), choose DPI values, paper width and height, and image size. Simple, yes?
